Wiring and Cabling Installation

LAN Wiring
Your “LAN” is your “Local Area Network.” This is basically a network of all of your workplace computers and devices that are connected to the same server or other communications line.

We recommend using Category 7 UTP cables to link your computers and devices to an Ethernet hub. Hubs allow you to connect and disconnect devices without interfering with the other connected devices. This hub also works to direct your LAN’s traffic.

In terms of wiring, copper wiring should be fine for small to medium sized LANs.

Connecting to the Internet
Many of these computers and devices in your LAN will require Internet access. To make sure your entire office has Internet access, you’ll need a router.

Routers are devices that allow you to broadcast Internet to your LAN either through a connected wire or wirelessly.

Choosing which router is best for you will depend on your business and your connectivity needs. Some routers are best for smaller businesses, while others are specialized for higher connection speeds. Do your research as you look to buy a router.

Most routers come with the Ethernet cables necessary for set-up.

Voice Cabling
For each place where you would like a phone, you’ll need to have at least 2 wires. However, it would be better to have more than that, such as a 6-wire cable, just in case you need to use more wires for signaling or something else later on.

Voice circuits, compared to the other things we have listed, aren’t as difficult to wire. You don’t need Category 5 cable like you’ll need for LAN wiring.

One of the newer cabling possibilities is to use something called isoE. This would combine almost 100 circuits so that it could merge both voice and LAN on a single cable, making it a viable option to consider.

Hire Some Help
